The Hidden Operational Cost of Urinal Splashback

Urinal splashback is more than a restroom cleaning issue. Global research shows why it affects cleaning effort, odour, safety and customer perception.


A wet floor beneath a urinal is rarely treated as a strategic facility problem. It is usually dealt with in the same way it has always been dealt with: a mop, a stronger cleaner, another inspection round and, where possible, a fragrance product to make the space feel more acceptable.


That response is understandable. It also leaves the underlying condition unchanged.

In a low traffic restroom, the impact may be modest. In a restaurant, hotel, office tower, stadium, university, hospital or retail centre, the same condition repeats throughout the day. The result is not one dramatic incident. It is a steady accumulation of cleaning effort, odour management, surface wear and a restroom experience that can influence how people judge the entire facility.


Urinal splashback is therefore not just a cleaning issue. It is an operations issue.

A familiar problem, now measured by research

Most people have seen the evidence without needing a study: moisture on the floor near the fixture, residue on the wall, unpleasant odour that returns quickly after cleaning, and a restroom that looks neglected even when the cleaning team is doing its job.

What has changed is that researchers have begun to explain why this happens and what can reduce it.


Researchers at the University of Waterloo examined the fluid dynamics of urination and designed new fixture concepts around a simple physical principle. When a liquid stream hits a surface at a steep angle, it breaks into droplets that scatter outward. When the stream is guided along a much shallower surface path, splash is dramatically reduced.

Their published work estimated that as much as 264,172 gallons of urine may reach public restroom walls and floors in the United States each day through splashback. The study also estimated that cleaning the spilled volume can require roughly ten times as much water. These figures are model based national estimates, not a count of every individual restroom. Even so, they illustrate the scale of a small, repeated event when multiplied across millions of uses.


The core lesson is more useful than the headline number. Splashback is not an unavoidable byproduct of a public urinal. It is influenced by fixture geometry, impact angle and how the user interacts with the fixture. The effect is personal as well as operational. When droplets leave the bowl, they can land on the user’s shoes and clothing, including trousers, as well as nearby surfaces. A design that helps keep splash inside the fixture is therefore intended to help keep users’ footwear and clothing cleaner, while also reducing the mess the facility team must manage.

Why the real cost is difficult to see

Facility managers do not usually receive an invoice labelled “splashback.” The cost is embedded in the daily routine. A cleaner makes an extra pass through the restroom. A supervisor receives an odour complaint. More product is used on the floor and grout. A tenant or guest sees a wet surface and assumes the space is poorly maintained. A hospitality business risks an experience that contradicts the standard it wants its customers to remember.


This is why the issue deserves a broader lens than cleaning labour alone.


Research on Canadian restaurant patrons found that restroom appearance was the strongest driver of perceived restroom cleanliness and that cleanliness directly influenced intent to return. Broader consumer research reaches the same conclusion. A Cintas survey found that 74 percent of American respondents form a negative impression of a business when they encounter a dirty restroom. Bradley Corporation has reported over many years that restroom conditions affect whether people return to and spend more with a business.


Those findings do not mean a wet urinal floor alone determines a customer decision. They do show that restrooms are part of the brand experience, especially when the setting is a restaurant, hotel, event venue, healthcare facility or premium office property.


For facility managers and service providers, the operational issue is equally direct. Work that prevents a recurring mess can be more valuable than work that repeatedly removes it.

The Amsterdam lesson: a small intervention can change behaviour

The most famous example comes from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. In the early 1990s, an airport cleaning manager introduced a small image of a fly inside the urinal bowl. The objective was not decorative. It provided a natural target for users.


The intervention became a classic example of behavioural design because it was simple and inexpensive. Accounts of the program commonly report lower spillage and an 8 percent reduction in the airport’s total public washroom cleaning budget. Some retellings cite splash reductions ranging from 50 to 80 percent.


The exact figures should be treated carefully. The original Schiphol intervention was not a controlled scientific trial, and the result should not be presented as a universal guarantee. Its enduring value is the principle it demonstrated: changing conditions at the point of use can reduce the workload that follows.


A fly image guides attention and aiming. It does not change the fixture’s surface geometry. That distinction matters. Better user behaviour can help, but a design that also accounts for the physics of impact may offer a more durable path to reducing splash.

Better restrooms change how people use a place


The link between restroom conditions and public perception is not limited to airports or restaurants. In Tokyo, the Tokyo Toilet Project took a broad approach to improving public restrooms before and during the period surrounding the 2020 Olympic Games. This was not a splashback intervention. It was a comprehensive investment in cleanliness, accessibility, safety and design. The documented results included higher user satisfaction and a major increase in use at several redesigned sites.


The lesson is not that a urinal screen can transform an entire public toilet system. The lesson is that people notice restroom conditions, and that visible investment in the experience can change trust, comfort and willingness to use the facility.


In Australia, waterless urinals have been adopted in some settings to reduce water consumption and remove the need for a conventional flush. Waterless systems address a different operational problem from urine splashback. They still reinforce a related point: buyers will consider fixture adjacent innovations when they are easy to maintain and connected to a tangible facility outcome.

Cleaning after the event is necessary, but it is not prevention


No product eliminates the need for proper restroom cleaning. Floors still need to be maintained, fixtures still need servicing and odour still needs to be managed. However, most conventional responses begin after urine has already reached the wrong surface. Stronger chemicals manage the residue. Fragrance manages perception. More frequent inspections manage the visible result. Each is valuable, but each is reactive.


Aiming cues such as the Schiphol fly can reduce part of the problem by influencing user behaviour. Standard urinal screens can support deodorizing and drain hygiene. Yet many existing screens were not developed around the specific mechanics of splash reduction.


The opportunity is to move upstream. Instead of treating splashback as an unavoidable condition that cleaning teams must absorb, the product design can seek to reduce it at the source while maintaining the practical features facility teams expect.

How Sarga II used the evidence

  3. The replaceable insert is designed to reduce the conditions that create splashback while supporting passive deodorizing, because odour control remains an important part of the buyer’s daily reality.

  4. Finally, it has to be simple for cleaning teams to handle. A product that creates service complexity will not create the operational benefit it promises.


Patent applications for the Sarga II concept are pending in Canada and the United States. The product has been developed from the evidence that better outcomes can come from a better interaction between user, surface and fixture.

The practical question for facilities


The question is not whether cleaning teams should continue to clean urinal areas. Of course they should. The better question is whether an organization can reduce the amount of repeated mess it asks those teams to manage.


For facilities with heavy restroom traffic, recurring odour complaints, wet floors near urinals or high expectations for the customer experience, that question is worth asking. A cleaner restroom is not only a visual standard. It is a signal of how an organization manages its operations.
